Breakout EDU Library Orientation

I love Breakout EDU.  I have been able to be involved when a couple of teachers have done some breakout activities with their classes over the last few months of school. I really wanted to try it out for the students that come to my space.  I decided that a really wanted to try it as the beginning of the year orientation activity.  So here is what we did...

The first Clue was given to each group and it looked like this.

After they completed this task they were given a map of the learning commons and this story

The directions in this story and the map helped them to be able to open the directional lock!  We did have to help them out with this one a little. But once they got going in the right direction (hahaha) they were able to open this lock.  Inside the little box the directional lock opened was a Learning Commons expectations sheet that looked like this:

and a UV pen. The last lock was a letter lock so with an invisible ink pen we circled the letters on the sheet that spelled the word MAKER.  The kids got this one really quickly! Inside the large box was a note to congratulate them on breaking out and that for the rest of the block they were going to find a good fit book and get settled in to do some reading.  Most groups were done in about 15-20 minutes.  Super fun!

One of the boys in our school that has trouble reading social cues and just seems to be a bit out of step with the other kids most of the time is in our space a lot.  When he got done this activity, he came up to us and told us that the activity was exhilirating!  Haha!  That is very high praise and made all of the work it took to put this together worth it.  We went through all of the 770 students in our school and it was well received by all of them!  Most of them were engaged and excited to participate.  Now I need to think of another way to use these again!
